* Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell delivered a significant speech at the Jackson Hole symposium, where he diagnosed high inflation as primarily stemming from supply-side disruptions related to the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Critics of the Fed’s "higher for longer" interest rate policy, believe Powell's analysis is spot on.
More importantly, Powell signaled that the Fed is likely to begin cutting rates at their September meeting, which comes as a relief to many. CORE inflation was 1.8% in 2019, and is currently down to 2.6%, closer to the Fed’s 2% target. The unemployment rate was 3.6% in 2019, and its currently 4.3%. Last week’s BLS news put the nail in the coffin, confirming weakness in the labor market after 818,000 jobs created disappeared from the count. The Fed is in perfect position for a cut.
